For Immediate Release

TORONTO, November 2, 2026 — Today, Liberal leadership candidate Lee Fairclough released Transportation and Public Transit that Works, her plan to make travel safer, more reliable and more affordable across Ontario. A Lee Fairclough Liberal government will replace Doug Ford’s poorly planned, politically motivated transportation decisions with evidence-based investments that reduce gridlock, improve service, and make roads safer.

A Lee Fairclough Liberal government will create municipal transit systems that work for everyone. This includes restoring predictable operating funding for municipal transit; accelerating electrified GO service; improving regional bus and transit capacity; and creating an Eastern Ontario transit authority.

Lee also commits to make Ontario roads and highways safer and more effective with solutions such as modernizing infrastructure on Highways 11, 17, 69 and the Trans-Canada; fixing dangerous intersections; stable funding for repairs; cracking down on speeding and dangerous driving; uploading major provincial routes serving Ottawa and supporting safe walking and cycling. A Lee Fairclough government will cancel the Ford government’s fantasy 401 tunnel plan and reinvest this money in evidence-based solutions.

“When Ontarians aren’t moving, neither is our economy,” said Fairclough. “Ford’s Conservatives have used transportation policy as a political game, while Ontarians face dangerous commutes, and lose valuable time with family waiting in traffic and for unreliable transit. My plan will properly invest in transportation infrastructure with practical solutions that will improve people’s daily lives and support the economy in all regions.”

Municipal Transit that Works for Everyone

  • Restore predictable annual operating funding for municipal transit agencies.
  • Improve GO Transit serving the Greater Golden Horseshoe by accelerating rail electrification, accelerating peak and off-peak service, expediting improvements to the Milton Line; restoring bus routes eliminated by the Ford Conservatives in 2019; creating a municipal transit signal priority fund; and addressing crew shortages.
  • Setting a minimum year-round service standard for provincially funded rail and bus corridors outside the GTA.
  • Value-for-money audit of Metrolinx.
  • Improve Ontario Northland services; restore passenger rail to Northwestern Ontario.
  • Work with the City of Ottawa to upload the LRT to the province; fund an Eastern Ontario transit authority and explore two-way, all-day service; and collaborate to improve transit connections between Ottawa and Gatineau.

Safer Roads for Everyone

  • As Liberal Opposition Leader, fight for a full, open and transparent review of the proposed Highway 413.
  • As Premier, cancel Doug Ford’s Highway 401 tunnel plan and reinvest the funding.
  • Improve safety on Highways 11 and 17 and the Trans-Canada through highway twinning or a 2+1 road design, and complete twinning on Highway 69.
  • Fix dangerous intersections, starting with provincial highways with the worst collision records.
  • Give municipalities stable, formula-based funding to repair roads and bridges.
  • Increase fines and enforcement for speeding and dangerous driving in school zones, and the 400-series highways.
  • Work with the City of Ottawa to upload major provincial routes, including Highway 417 and get the Barnsdale Road–Highway 416 interchange built.
  • Expand highways including widening Highway 174 to Rockland and exploring a new connecting ring road to Highways 416 and 417.
  • Active Transportation Plan that builds safe walking and cycling routes across Ontario.

“Getting around looks different for a student in Belleville than for someone driving to a medical appointment in Northern Ontario or a commuter on the GO train,” said Fairclough. “But across Ontario, people want the same things: safety, reliability and connection. That’s what this plan will deliver.”
